A Brief History of Ferry Services in Itchenor
Since the 17th century, travellers on foot have chosen to use a ferry to cross the water at Itchenor, saving themselves a 13 mile trip on foot around the water.
Over the years, demand waned, and in 1964 the ferryman applied to the House of Lords to discontinue the ferry service, which until then had been operated 24 hours a day. In 1976 the ferry was brought back into service by Chichester Harbour Conservancy to join the footpath network and to provide a taxi service for yachtsmen. Today the seasonal ferry takes passengers and bikes between Ferry Hard and Itchenor Jetty, linking the public footpaths and allowing for a circular walk via Bosham and Fishbourne.
Meet the crew
Andy, Captain of the Itchenor Ferry
Andy is the friendly face behind the Itchenor Ferry, helping walkers, cyclists, yachtsmen and visitors cross the water between Itchenor Jetty and Smugglers Lane, Bosham.
Running with the rhythm of the harbour, Andy operates the seasonal ferry service that links the local footpaths and provides a convenient water crossing through Chichester Harbour. Whether you are enjoying a coastal walk, heading out for a day on the water, or need a lift to a moored vessel, Andy offers a reliable and practical service with local knowledge at its heart.
As well as the ferry crossing, Andy also provides a water taxi service to boats on the moorings in the Itchenor Reach, between Deep End and Birdham. By special arrangement, and depending on how busy the ferry is, trips may also be available to vessels in the Bosham Channel and to Cobnor Point.
